Past Oceanographic Projects (update: 8/2003)
I participated in a WOCE expedition in 1997 in the North
Atlantic where we made on-board measurements of CFCs. Some of
the results of this study were presented at the Ocean Science
meeting by my colleague Dong-Ha Min: Min, D.-H., Vollmer, M.K.
and Weiss, R.F., 1998. Ventilation of the Labrador Sea Water in the
Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean. Ocean Science Meeting, San Diego.
Methane Gas Hydrates
This is a collaboration with Miriam Kastner and Christian R.
Solem of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. During two
expedition in the Northeast Pacific we have collected profiles of
SF6 and CFC (and N2O) in order to estimate the age of the
ventilated part of the water column. The first expedition was
in 1998 of the Oregon Coast (Hydrate Ridge). The second
expedition was in 1999 of Eureka (California, Eel River). We
were also interested in CFCs in gas hydrates but unfortunately
no hydrates were recovered during these expeditions. In 2002
Christian Solem collected water samples from the Gulf of Mexico
which we analyzed for SF6 and CFCs. This time he was able to
collect methane gas hydrates from the sediment.
