Aerosol
and Cloud Chemistry (J. Schneider)
This research
group is part of the
Particle Chemistry
Department (headed by Prof. Dr. Stephan Borrmann), which is a joint facility of the
Max
Planck Institute for Chemistry and the
University
of Mainz (Institute
for Atmospheric Physics).
This department was founded in 2001, originally named "Cloud Physics
and
Chemistry" and re-named in 2005.
The main
scientific
interest of the
Aerosol and Cloud Chemistry group is the in-situ measurement
of the chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol and cloud particles.
We use various types of aerosol instruments, but the instrument
that we are mainly working with is the
Aerodyne
Aerosol Mass Spectrometer
(AMS), an instrument which is designed for the quantitative
measurement
of the chemical composition of aerosol particles with diameters between
50 and 1000 nm. With this instrument, several projects, including aircraft-based
and ground-based field projects as well as lab studies
have been carried out since 2001.
