PinGeneral Information

The Cosmochemistry Department consists of several groups of scientists and technical personnel whose research interests and activities span a wide variety of fields in cosmochemical and space sciences. These fields include: Isotope-, Geo- and Cosmochemistry - Isotope Cosmochronology; interaction of cosmic rays with meteoritic and planetary matter (noble gas isotopic studies); Planetary Exploration - Moon, Mars and Comets; interstellar grains - stellar nucleosynthesis.

In addition a large meteorite collection of close to 1250 specimens is maintained to support the Department´s research effort.

The major instrumentation available includes:

Solid State Mass spectrometers (5), sector 54 , MAT 261 180° view to our MS-Lab (70kB)
Solid-State MS Lab
Noble gas Mass spectrometers (4), LIANE
Ion Microprobe (2), IMS3f , NanoSIMS 50
a Scanning Electron Microscope LEO 1530

and 16 counting stations for Neutron Activation Analysis with a UNIX-based-workstation for data reduction.

The formerly two separate departments of Isotope-Cosmology and Cosmochemistry have been combined into one in October of 1996.

The Department is organized into the following groups:

Prof. Dr. G. W. Lugmair

Solar System and Planetary Evolution -
Isotope Cosmochemistry and Cosmochronology

Dr. U. Ott

Planetary Sciences, Cosmic Ray Effects,
Interstellar Grains

Dr. P. Hoppe

Presolar Grains in Meteorites

Dr. E. Jagoutz

Isotope Geo- and Cosmochemistry

Drs. J. Brückner and R. Rieder

Planetary Exploration - Mars, Moon and Comets

There are currently 2 Ph. D. Candidates, 4 Post-doctoral fellows and 8 Guest-Scientists from various countries.
