The Micromass Sector 54
Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometer
This is the latest version
of the Sector 54 type of TIMS. It was extensively re-designed and improved over
its predecessor and, because of an inverted magnet, it has a significantly
reduced footprint. It is equipped with 20 sample positions in the ion source.
The Multi-2 collector system features 9 long-life Faraday collectors whose
positions are computer controlled via stepping motors. The central Faraday
channel opens up into the WARP filter which facilitates about two orders of
magnitude improvement in abundance sensitivity. Small positive ion currents can
be measured with a Daly detector employing ion counting. At the very rear of
the instrument there is an additional Faraday detector next to a secondary
electron multiplier which is intended to be used to measure small negative ion
currents.
