Measurements focus on three locations, which are strategically distributed along the LBA- transects
(click on the sector of interest to see the sites from space)(ca. 200 kB).
- A mature, evergreen undisturbed forest in north-western Amazonia near Saõ Gabriel da Cachoeira, which is one of the wettest parts of Amazonia with precipitation exceeding 3000 mm/yr (continuous measurements of CO2, water and energy fluxes, and campaign-mode measurements of concentrations and fluxes of CH4, N2O, VOC).
- An undisturbed forest site in central Amazonia near Manaus, with mean annual rainfall of ~2400 mm (continuous measurements of CO2, water and energy fluxes as well as a campaign-mode measurements of CH4, N2O, VOC).
- Forest and pasture (cleared forest) sites in south-west periphery of the Amazonia basin in Rondônia with distinct seasonality in rainfall and mean annual rainfall of ~1900 mm.
(continuous measurements of CO2, water and energy fluxes; campaign-mode measurements of concentrations and fluxes of CH4, N2O, aerosol particles, O3, NOX, and VOC).
see also surface parameter digital maps of Rondonia (LBA - EOS Amazon: Pre-LBA Official Data Sets).
- Caxiuana is an undisturbed and protected rainforest site near the mouth of the Amazon, some 350 km west of Belem. The 33,000 ha ecological station lies within a far larger national forest. It contains largely Hyleian upland forest but also has wetlands savanna, varzea, igapo and other habitats. This reserve encompasses terra firme and seasonally flooded forest amidst a network of rivers and lakes, just east of the mouth of the great Xingu River (a south-bank tributary of the Amazon). (continuous measurements of CO2, water and energy fluxes as well as a campaign-mode measurements of CH4, N2O, VOC).
